James A. Dutra

age 85, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of service, hard work, and a profound love for his family.

A lifelong Chicagoan at heart, Jim was born and raised in the city, where he attended St. Mel’s High School. Following graduation, he answered the call to duty by enlisting in the United States Air Force. During his service, he was stationed at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho, an experience that remained a proud chapter of his life.

Upon returning to civilian life, Jim began a dedicated career with the BNSF Railroad. Known for his reliability and work ethic, he spent 32 years "on the rails" before enjoying a well-deserved retirement in 1996.

Jim was the cherished and loving husband of Sheila D. Dutra (nee Hendricks), with whom he shared 27 years of marriage. He was a devoted father to his children: Barbara Dutra, Susan (Michael) Noxon, Jacki (John) Konrad, Loren Paul Dutra, James Peter Dutra, and James Dutra, Jr. He was the dear brother of Mary Dutra and George Dutra, and was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lucy (nee O’Malley) Dutra, and his brother, Charles. His legacy further lives on through his many grandchildren, who will fondly remember his warmth and wit.

Outside of his professional life, Jim was a man of many talents and passions. He found great joy in the meticulous world of model railroading, a nod to his career that allowed him to keep the trains running long after retirement. He was also an accomplished cook and an avid gardener, finding peace and satisfaction in nurturing both his kitchen and his yard.

Perhaps most of all, Jim will be remembered for his great sense of humor. He had a gift for brightening a room and ensuring that those around him felt the warmth of his spirit.
